Lauren’s Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy
Age at Surgery 53
Location: Oley, PA USA

I had a hysterectomy due to abnormal vaginal bleeding along with huge blood clots. My diagnosis was only fibroids which I knew I had. Just didn’t know how many or how big. Before I had my hysterectomy I had a D&C to stop the bleeding and also try and remove the fibroid.

It all started May 9, 2021. I was watching TV and I felt like I peed myself. I got up and ran to the bathroom. As I pulled my pants down something fell out my underwear. The biggest clot I have ever seen. I thought I was dying. Made an appointment, went to gyno and they gave me pills. Bleeding stopped, June started again went back they changed to different pills. July started bleeding again gave me progesterone, it stopped. Come August 17 thru the 20 I bled so much those days I ended up going to the ER. I needed a blood transfusion as well as iron. I was in hospital for 3 days. I had the D&C in September, it did not work. The surgeon was in the office the day I had my post-op.

Dr. Williams saved my life. She took my uterus and cervix but left my ovaries. I am so grateful to her it was the best decision I have ever made.

Surgery was November 17, 2021 at 10 am. Once it was done and I was coming out of the anesthesia I was in horrible pain. I was in and out and when I was coming out the pain was bad. They moved me to my room and the pain was manageable. I was there just over night. They wanted me to use the bathroom and get up out of bed to sit. Never had a catheter before and boy that was an experience.

The most important thing to me as I recovered was will I still have a sex drive. My recovery was good. Took meds for a few days and then just Tylenol. My doctor said I couldn’t lift, vacuum, wash clothes, wash dishes and even cook for 8 weeks. When I went for my first check up she said everything looked good. Still not able to much. I was bored being home and not at work.

My doctor released me after 8 weeks with no restrictions. A few days later my family and I were on vacation in Mexico having a great time.

I am super glad I had the hysterectomy. Since having it I feel terrific and I have I still have a sex drive nothing in that department has changed. I did gain a little weight but nothing I can fix with diet and exercise.

The best advice I can give is do your research. As much as possible. I got baggy loose clothes to be comfortable. I wore sports bras for the same reason. Drink lots of water, make sure you have stool softener also. Everyone tolerates pain differently. Just try to do your homework and research as much as possible.
