Bubbles with Urination after Hysterectomy

After a hysterectomy, it seems you discover one new symptom after another. Some you expected – like fatigue, discomfort, and bowel issues – but others were unexpected. For instance, no one told you that you’d pass air through your vagina or feel air bubbles while urinating.

In most cases, vaginal flatulence – who knew there was even such a thing – resolve and are not a problem. But at times, they can be a sign that there’s a complication. One of the more serious complications could be vaginal cuff dehiscence.

It’s similar for air bubbles with urination. It might be nothing, or it could be a sign of something more serious.

If you are slightly dehydrated, something that can happen following a hysterectomy, you might see and feel some bubbles while urinating. Dehydration can also lead to rapid urination which also causes bubbles with urination.

Urine bubbles can also be a symptom of a urinary tract infection (UTI) Some risks factors for a UTI are surgery, dehydration, hormone imbalance, and menopause — yep, many women get one after a hysterectomy.

Bubbles with urination could be pneumaturia, or passing gas in your urine. This can happen if your urinary tract has been compromised in some way. Unfortunately, various parts of the urinary tract are at risk for injury during a hysterectomy and other pelvic surgery

The bubbles can also be a sign that you’ve developed a fistula, a complication that can occur with a hysterectomy. The fistula could exist between any of the different parts of your pelvic floor, allowing bacteria and even feces to pass into other areas.

If you experience bubbles with urination, it’s best to check with your doctor to determine if they are incidental or if there’s a more serious health issue that needs treatment. If the bubble are accompanied by fever, pain, bloody urine, or any other troublesome symptoms, get in touch with your doctor immediately or consider a trip to the ER.
