Adele’s Hysterectomy Story
Type of Hysterectomy: TAH and Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy
Age at Hysterectomy: 29
Location: Nottingham
I had my hysterectomy when I was 29 years old. I had suffered with endometriosis since I was 20. I had tried various treatments including laser treatment and being put through an early menopause at the age of 25. I’d tried various pills and nothing seemed to work I had weeks of work at the time and was always in pain. The doctors said I would grow out of it but I left asking for the hysterectomy. I knew the consequences of having it done which meant having no children and going through a very early menopause.I had asked the consultant for years before they finally agreed to do it just short of my 30th birthday.
I had a spinal epidural and also had a general and was put to sleep. The operation took about 2 hours and I woke up with an abdominal cut with staples. I was pain free for the first few days. And up and walking around a few days later. I was in the hospital for 6 days I caught a slight infection in my bladder where the catheter had been.
I found my recovery very easy I was up and about after the first week and riding my bike after 4 weeks! I recovered great. My greatest challenge was meeting new mums or being around parents as I felt I had nothing in common and they wouldn’t talk to me. I was released from my gyno after 8 weeks.
I have the odd few issues. Hot flushes being a major problem and finding the right HRT. I also take calcium for my bones as the HRT don’t give you everything.
I would say go with whatever feels right. Don’t listen to the horror stories. I wouldn’t change mine now it’s the best thing I’ve done. Explore all the different surgical options too.
