Medicalising the menopause
Over the past half-century, the social terrain of health and illness has been transformed. What were once considered normal human events and common human problems, such as birth, ageing and the menopause, are now considered medical conditions.
For better or worse, medicine increasingly permeates daily life. We have increased use of drugs to manage the ‘symptoms’ of the menopause and it’s status as a passage of power to what could be called The Wise Woman is being rapidly diminished in favour of an emphasis on looking and staying ‘young’.
