Latest hysterectomy research findings
Over the last few years the Hysterectomy Association have been conducting ongoing survey based research into the post hysterectomy recovery experience of women and their information needs. Every so often we report on the findings to see if things are changing and I thought I’d take this opportunity to share our latest updates:
Post Hysterectomy Recovery Experience
- Only just over 13% of women return to work between 4 and 6 weeks, just over 15% go back within 8 weeks and a whopping 25% are off for longer than 10 weeks.
- Less than 10% of women feel that their hysterectomy has impacted negatively on their sex lives
- 43% of women report feeling happier after their hysterectomy whilst 19% say they feel less happy than before their operation
- A staggering 76.5% of women would choose to have a hysterectomy again whilst only 7.1% would definitely not do it again.
Information Needs of Hysterectomy Patients
- 78% of the information women received was about Hysterectomy and the majority was through the Internet although 31% of women did say that their consultant had given them the most information.
- 67% of women had the most information before their operation yet over 10% said they weren’t given any information at all.
- Despite the amount of information they were given less than 30% felt they knew exactly what to expect.
- Women would like to receive more information about exercise post hysterectomy and also sex after their surgery at 69.1% and 52.9% respectively.
Although these are a random selection of some of our findings so far, we plan to do some more in-depth analysis over the coming months.
